Selected Poems

Ivy Gibbs was well known for her verse in Australia and New Zealand from 1920-1948. In 1949, Arhur H. Stockwell published her work in England as The Day is in a Pensive Mood.

Selected Poems provides an introduction to her verse selected from newspapers, magazines and anthologies, and shows a significant New Zealand poet.

The book is selected by New Zealand poet, critic and editor Mark Pirie, who is an Archivist for the Poetry Archive of New Zealand Aotearoa.

Ivy Olive Gibbs (c1886-1966) was a trans-Tasman poet and children’s writer based predominantly in New Zealand. Her verse in The Bulletin, Australia, made her well known between 1920 and 1930, and she was widely published in New Zealand between the late 1920s and 1941. Children’s verses by Gibbs appeared in The Christian Science Monitor in Boston, North America, 1944-49.

A critic referred to her in Sydney, Australia, 1923, as ‘the golden-haired and golden-hearted girl who has written much delightful verse this year.’

Mark Pirie compiled five collections of her uncollected poetry from 2012-2015 in New Zealand and has done extensive research into her as well as publishing a bio-bibliography and a supplementary bio-bibliography for her.
