Mark Pirie published in New York

Recently I was published in New York in the journal Shabdaguchha, January-December 2023, Volume 25, Number 3/4, poets from 25 countries.

The journal is an international bilingual poetry magazine edited by Hassanal Abdullah, the author of more than 50 books. He has appeared at poetry festivals in China, Poland, Greece, Mexico, Canada and India.

Abdullah recently edited a World Poetry Anthology on Amazon. See the publisher's website: World Poetry Anthology / Edited by Hassanal Abdullah — Darklight Publishing LLC

He approached me to be included as a NZ poet known overseas to Professor Nicholas Birns of NYU. I served on the advisory board of Antipodes (USA). When the copy arrived, I found myself alongside many distinguished poets, including the 2020 Nobel Prize winning poet Louise Glück, Australian John Kinsella and the Arab poet Adonis.

broadsheet 30 features Tony Beyer

The latest issue of my journal broadsheet, no.30, November 2022, features the poet and editor Tony Beyer.

The issue includes a selection of his new poems.

I have published Tony’s poetry for many years, including two of his books through HeadworX, and it’s an honour to feature him and some of his friends in broadsheet.

Others included are: Peter Bland, Alistair Paterson, Piers Davies, Siobhan Harvey, Janet Charman, John Gallas (NZ/UK), Michael Harlow, Annie Klier Newcomer (USA), Vaughan Rapatahana, Ron Riddell, Tim Saunders, Jenny Powell, Gill Ward and Mark Young.

This will be the final issue of broadsheet that I have edited since 2008. I have decided to call it a day editing journals. I started off doing JAAM in 1995 and continued with broadsheet till 2022, a 27-year service to the New Zealand literary scene.

Thanks to all those who supported and subscribed to broadsheet. It was great to work with so many poets established and new over the years.

The archive remains online for future use.

Mark Pirie translated into Bosnian and Turkish

In 2024, I was translated into Bosnian and Turkish in the anthology, Close Encounters of the Poetic Kind: A Collection of Poetry by Poets from Australia and New Zealand eds. Vesna Suljić and Mehtap Őzer-Isović, University of Sarajevo, 2024.

It is an anthology of translations selected from the anthology Notes for the Translators that was published in 2012.

The poem of mine translated was 'Progress'.

It is an honour to be included in this University of Sarajevo project.
